Amazon, currently one of the most successful eReader manufacturers in the world, is proceeding with unspoken plans to begin the development and production of an Amazon tablet. Amazon has been positioning itself for an entrance into the thriving, potentially overcrowded tablet market for some time now. With reports of the company ordering huge quantities of tablet production materials, particularly touch panels and Fringe Field Switching displays, it seems like it is prepared to take the leap soon.
The always dubious DigiTimes first reported that Amazon has placed orders for parts with device manufacturer Quanta, which also works with Sony and RIM. The orders indicate Amazon plans to be selling 700,000 to 800,000 of its tablets every month.
If Amazon could actually achieve such sales figures it would easily make its tablet the second most successful game in town after the iPad 2.
No Update to Amazon Kindle eInk Display
While the prospect of an Amazon tablet is exciting, there have also been reports on what has become Amazon’s bread and butter product, the Kindle eReader. The Kindle’s Pearl eInk display will not be receiving an update in 2011, as Amazon decides to maintain a two year upgrade cycle.
Pearl has received commendation as the Kindle’s display thus far. When an update does come, it could possibly appear as the Triton color eInk display, or as an enhanced black and white display that supports full motion video playback.
For the time being, the Kindle is staying just the way it is, and Amazon will have its hands full with several hundred thousand LCD touchscreens that it will need to find a place for.
