A new analysis of emailed purchase receipts for the Kindle Fire estimates that sales of Amazon’s low-priced tablet reached 95,000 units during the first day of availability, according to a new report.
The estimate comes from eDataSource, which is able to gain insight into eCommerce sales via its panel of inboxes. Amazon unveiled the Fire, along with three new Kindle models, on Sept. 28 and made the four devices available for immediate pre-order.
According to eCommerce , the Kindle Fire surpassed sales of the three other Kindle units combined, estimating total sales of the new eReaders at approximately 25,000 units for the same period. The company also notes that 27 percent of Kindles were sold with some kind of accessory, with the Marware protective covers being the most popular.
Another report indicates that Amazon will be taking a $50 hit on every Fire sold. Despite this loss, the online retailer hopes to make up the money in content purchases, according to the report, which also claims that the Kindle Fire could potentially become the No. 2 selling tablet after the iPad.
In related news, Barnes & Noble is now selling its Nook Color and Nook Simple Touch Reader at Target stores nationwide. The eReaders went on sale yesterday, Oct. 2, at Target stores with the Nook Color retailing for $249 and the Nook Simple Touch Reader selling for $139.
