Verizon May Rebrand Xoom Tablets as Droid Xyboard

It appears the upcoming Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition tablets will be getting new names, as rumors buzz that Verizon Wireless will rebrand the devices as the Droid Xyboard 10.1 and the Droid Xyboard 8.2, respectively.

While the Big Red has yet to confirm the new moniker, the carrier applied for trademark protection on “Xyboard” last month.

After some speculation, Motorola finally announced the Xoom 2 and its Media Edition counterpart in the beginning of November. While Moto kept mum on a possible name change, the company showed its latest tablets off in a promotional video. As of now, the tablets have only be confirmed for a UK launch, with Wi-Fi-only variants of the devices set to ship in the UK and Ireland in a few weeks.

Both tablets will be identical internally, packing 1.2GHz dual-core processors, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Additionally, both slates will sport Gorilla Glass and splash resistant displays, though the Xoom 2 is said to have a 10.1-inch screen, while the Media Edition will feature an 8.2-inch display. Motorola’s latest tablets will also feature a 1.3MP front-facing camera, as well as a 5MP rear shooter, and will ship with Android 3.2 Honeycomb.
