RIM to Unveil BlackBerry Mobile Fusion

RIM has introduced a new software system that will allow companies to integrate a number of competing devices and operating systems into their corporate mobile ecosystem. 

Known as BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, the software will incorporate most of the security features already offered by RIM, such as the ability to remotely lock and wipe data from lost phones. Additionally, the system will allow tech departments to better manage company-wide connectivity options, as well as install applications and software updates, regardless the type of smartphone employees are using. 

RIM is keenly aware of the consumerization trend sweeping the enterprise, a trend signified by increasing numbers of employees bringing traditionally consumer-oriented devices like the iPhone into the corporate setting, supplanting BlackBerry handsets, a former mainstay of corporate America. Such a variety of devices in a company causes strain for IT departments when it comes to logistics and security. Other companies, like Toronto-based Fixmo Inc., have begun devising software that allows companies to more easily manage and secure such devices. With BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, RIM aims to enter the software and security realm of the market and sustain its position in the corporate world. 

The software will be compatible with the current BlackBerry OS, as well as with BBX, RIM’s upcoming OS that will be a single platform used on both tablets and smartphones, according to the company. The service is expected to roll out early next year and will also work on the PlayBook tablet, devices running Android and the iPhone and iPad.
