Apple iPad 3 Leaks Suggest Spec Bump, iPad 2 Sticking Around

The Apple iPad 3 rumor mill is swirling, with new bits of information all but confirming what has already leaked: the Apple iPad 3 will have a high resolution Retina Display that may pack as many as 300 pixels per inch (ppi), which nearly matches the resolution of the iPhone 4 and 4S, and is more than double the 132 ppi found on the original iPad and iPad 2.

In addition, new rumors suggest the iPad 3 rear camera will be on par with the advanced shooter on the iPhone 4S, and the iPad 3 front-facing camera will also be bumped to support HD FaceTime video chats. The increased spec count will thicken up the iPad 3 a bit, as it’s said to sport an approximate 1mm of extra girth over the iPad 2. The cost should remain the same however, starting at $499, when it launches in March.

The rumors also reiterate that Apple is considering keeping the iPad 2 on the market and lowering the price to $399 or $299 for a new 8GB unit, in order to better compete with the relatively low-cost Kindle Fire and NOOK Tablet.
