RIM Stops 16GB PlayBook Production

RIM has stopped production on the 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook and retailers will sell off existing stock. Instead, RIM is focusing on the 32GB and 64GB PlayBook models and remains "committed to the tablet space."

PlayBook According to RIM, the higher capacity models offer higher value to RIM customers. Though RIM didn't claim this to be the case, the company probably sees a higher profit margin on the devices, too. After all, the manufacturer markup from a 16GB to 32GB device is very often much larger than the actual cost of the added storage.

Despite all its troubles, the PlayBook keeps chugging along. It recently received a major update to the PlayBook OS 2.0, is due for 2.1 soon, and RIM confirmed a 4G PlayBook will be coming in 2012, along with an update to the new BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10.
