Staying true to its word of opening a slew of holiday pop-up stores across the country, Microsoft has confirmed that the additional locations will open on October 26, the same day that Windows 8 and the Surface RT tablet go on sale.
The supplementary stores will pop-up in 32 locations, including New York, California, and Texas, as well as a few cities in Canada, and will be the only brick- and- mortar stores selling Microsoft's latest slate.
After deciding to only offer the Surface in its own stores, which includes select online sites, Microsoft combated a fallout from potential customers wishing to see the tablet in action prior to purchasing it by announcing the additional locations. Previous to this temporary expansion, the company only had 20 retail outlets in the United States, giving people limited options to try before they buy.
While Microsoft also touted plans to announce more pop-up locations at a later point, the company has still not done so, leaving out countries outside of the U.S. and Canada.
Currently the best-known Windows 8 tablet, the Surface could likely spark a lot of sales, especially with the most heightened shopping season right around the corner. And with 29 of the 32 provisional Microsoft stores located in the same mall or shopping center that also houses an Apple retail store, the two tech companies will go head-to-head this holiday season, as the Cupertino-based company is rumored to release a smaller version of its famed iPad, dubbed the iPad Mini, in a few weeks.
