Acer Pushes Back Release of Windows RT Tablet

Acer will soon introduce a dockable tablet running Windows 8, but has decided to push back the release of one running Windows RT.

Acer Iconia W510Computers running Windows 8 are built around x86 processors, but Windows RT-based models use ARM chips. These are typically less expensive, but can't run software created for Windows 7 and before.

The Microsoft Surface is the first tablet with Win RT to be released, and the first to bear Microsoft's own brand. This has made some computer makers nervous, including Acer.

"Originally we had a very aggressive plan to come out very early next year, but because of Surface, our R&D development doesn't stop, but we are much more cautious," Acer President Jim Wong told Reuters. "Originally our plan was Q1, but now I don't think it will be earlier than Q2."

The Windows 8-based Acer Iconia W510, on the other hand, is scheduled to debut on Nov. 9. Its pricing will start at $500.
