Tips for Tablet Shopping this Holiday Season

Some say we're living in the Post-PC Era -- a time when tablets and phones are replacing desktops and laptops. We have plenty of suggestions for people who would like to join in.

There is a very wide range of tablets available, although from a hardware standpoint they tend to fall into two groups: ones with screens about 10 inches in size, or smaller devices with screens around 7 inches.

Within those groups, it's not really the hardware that differentiates the models, it's the software. That's why we have grouped out shopping suggestions by operating system... if you really want an iPad, there's no point in making you look at advice on Android tablets, and the reverse is also true.

For those who need a nudge toward where to get started, the iPad is best known for its easy-to-use operating system and large array of third-party apps. Android tablets are more flexible, giving users greater freedom to tweak their devices. Those who are drawn to Windows-based tablets are looking for the full power of a PC in a more portable form.

On the other hand, if you just want something to read ebooks on, you might consider getting an eReader. We have some suggestions for those, too.
