Apple may have significantly sped up the rate at which it releases upgraded versions of its tablets. An analyst says that, based on conversions he had at CES, he now believes that the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 will be out this spring.
Our checks at CES indicate Apple will release the iPad 5 and the second-generation iPad mini this March. The iPad 5 is expected to be lighter and thinner than the iPad 4 that was released in October, while the form factor of the iPad mini should be similar to the first generation iPad mini that debuted in October.
A Change of Pace
Starting in 2010, Apple introduced an updated version of its tablet each year, and only once each year. That pattern changed this fall, when the iPad 4 was released about 7 months after its predecessor.
At this point, it's not clear if this was a one-time thing, or Apple's new strategy. When the iPad 4 came out, there were unconfirmed reports that this was done because the company realized the iPad 3 wasn't enough of an upgrade over its predecessor.
However, if the analyst from Topeka Capital Markets is correct, then Apple apparently now intends to come out with the new iPad and iPad mini models twice a year as a matter of course.
