Acer Gives a Glimpse of Its Android Tablet Plans

It won't shock the world that Acer is prepping more Android-based tablets -- the company already makes several. Acer's President has revealed just a bit about the next two.

The company recently unveiled the Iconia B1, a 7-inch tablet that will have a very low price, $150 or less. And this is apparently the pattern Acer wants to follow: offering Android tablets at as low a price as it can.

President Linxian Lang told the China Times that his company is working on a pair of budget slates -- 7 inch and 10 inch. Unlike the B1, these will have quad-core processors, but these will be made by MediaTek, not one of the better-known chip makers.

Lots Of Tough Competition

In many developed countries, Acer is going to face some tough competition, and foes with advantages he doesn't have.

A number of companies make inexpensive tablets, such as Google and Amazon, and these device makers subsidize the prices for their hardware. The tablets are tied to their software, music, and book stores, and that's where they expect to get their profits.

Acer can't do this. It can't build up a store the size of Amazon's or Google. So its mobile devices will have to generate their own profits.
