Nokia CEO Again Suggests a Windows Tablet Is in Development

Stephen Elop, CEO of Nokia, says that his company is seriously considering releasing a tablet, although he stopped short of making any announcements.

Speaking to reporters today, Elop said, "We haven't announced tablets at this point, but it is something we are clearly looking at very closely. We are studying very closely the market right now as Microsoft has introduced the Surface tablet, so we are trying to learn from that and understand what the right way to participate would be and at what point in time."

Elop went on to make is clear that Nokia focusing its attention on a device running Microsoft Windows, but it's open to other possibilities as well. He said, "It is important to note that the opportunity for companionship is something that any user is looking for. So, when you think about the Lumia 920, running on Windows Phone, having a Windows tablet or PC or Xbox is something that will give us the opportunity to have a pretty integrated experience. Our first focus on what we look at is clearly in the Microsoft side. But we have made no decision or announced nothing."

Microsoft will not allow Windows Phone to be used on tablets. Instead, it created Windows RT for those who want to use smartphone-type processors in a tablet.

The CEO of Nokia went on to say that is company is open to both 7-inch and 10-inch models.

Many of Elop's comments mirror ones he made back in September.

What the Rumors Say

According to an unconfirmed report from late last year, Nokia has gone quite a bit beyond considering its options and allegedly plans to introduce a 10-inch tablet running Windows RT later this month, at the MWC tradeshow.
