More Evidence Emerges that the iPad mini 2 Will Have a Retina Display

Although the iPad mini is selling well, there's one area where this tablet has drawn criticism: the low-resolution screen. However, there is growing evidence that the second-generation version is going to have a much higher-res one.

A report originating in Asia indicates that AU Optronics is getting ready to start producing a 7.9-inch display for Apple that should end any complaints about the resolution.

The screen used in the current iPad mini has a 1024 x 768 resolution at 163ppi, while the upcoming one will allegedly have a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels and 324ppi pixel density.

This is more than enough to qualify it as a "Retina" screen -- one in which individual pixels are so small, they can't be seen by the human eye with the device held at a normal distance. The current model does not qualify.

This isn't the first time an unconfirmed report has indicated Apple intends to put a higher-res display in its second 7.9-inch tablet An earlier one came just after the first version debuted.

There are conflicting reports on when the iPad mini 2 will be available, with possible release dates ranging from next month to next fall.
