A new report says Apple could introduce the fifth-generation iPad as early as next month. This might answer a burning question for those considering a new iOS tablet.
The company refreshed its full-size tablet line last March, continuing a long-held trend of sprint-time updates. But then it surprised everyone by introducing the iPad 4 last fall.
This has left people scratching their heads about when the next version will be released. Will Apple return to spring updates, or is fall now the time when new versions will be available?
According to an unconfirmed report from iMore, April is the month. Or at least close to that time.
Is This Logical?
An update just six months after the release of Apple's last 9.7-inch tablet makes a bit more sense if one considers that the iPad 4 wasn't much of a change over its predecessor. It has a faster processor than the iPad 3 and the new Lightning data/power port, but no other changes.
The iPad 4 was reportedly released because many consumers didn't consider the iPad 3 enough of an improvement over the iPad 2 to justify an upgrade. So Apple tweaked the design a bit.
The iPad 5, on the other hand, is supposedly going to be a much more significant change. Unconfirmed reports indicate that it will have a smaller form-factor while still keeping the same 9.7-inch screen. This should help it keep up its popularity at a time when 7- to 8-inch tablets are all the rage.
