Samsung ATIV Tab RT Being Pulled in Europe; Not a Good Sign for Windows RT

Samsung is one of a handful of companies who put out tablets running Windows RT, but the company is pulling the ATIV Tab RT off shelves in Germany and other European countries.

Even though it made a computer running Windows RT, Samsung was always a bit wishy-washy about this alternate version of Windows 8. The ATIV Tab RT was never released at all in the U.S., and Samsung blamed customer confusion about the differences between Windows 8 and Windows RT for this decision.

The device was released in Europe, but Samsung is withdrawing it from this market. Company executives told the German website MobileGeeks that if found no interest in Windows RT among European consumers.

Windows 8 vs. Windows RT

Windows 8 is the latest generation in Microsoft's long-running series of operating systems. It runs on x86 chips from Intel and AMD, and can handle third-party software written for previous versions (Windows 7, Windows Vista, etc.).

Windows RT, on the other hand, is for devices that have ARM-based processors. Because of this, it has no backward compatibility with older Windows software. All apps have to be written anew for this new platform. And so far, there's not a huge selection.

There is an increasing number of computers running the full version of Windows 8. There are fewer Windows RT devices, and that number is declining.
