Employees of the U.S. Department of Defense will soon be able to use an Apple iPad or iPhone as part of their jobs.
They won't, however, be be approved for use for secure communications. A DoD spokesperson told the WSJ that the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) is expected to announce in the next few weeks that devices running iOS 6 are approved for non-classified tasks such as email and web access.
According to a recent unconfirmed report, the Pentagon intends to buy nearly a quarter million Apple tablets: 120,000 full-size iPads and 100,000 iPad minis.
While this is a relatively small percentage of the total number sold, approval from the DoD is likely to get companies in other security-conscious businesses to be more receptive to Apple's mobile offerings.
