Intel unveiled its new Silvermont microarchitecture today. This will use the company's 22nm Tri-Gate SoC process, and will deliver three-times greater peak performance or the same performance at one-fifth less power than the current-generation Intel Atom processor core.
The power savings are critical to make tablets with Intel chips more competitive. The drain from previous Intel chips resulted in devices with half the battery lives of very similar models that use ARM-based processors.
Silvermont is the code-name for this new processor core. It will be part of the Intel's Bay Trail processor in tablets expected to be out by the holiday shopping season. Smartphones will use the Merrifield processor which will also use Silvermont cores.
This is scheduled to be replaced next year by Airmont, which will use a 14nm process, which should lead to even greater power savings. Yet another update is planned for 2015.
