Leap Motion released a video this week giving the world an advanced look at its system for controlling a computer without touching it.
In the video, which the company describes as a "sneak peek", a user demonstrates a range of operations on a Windows computer with hand gestures done a short distance from the device's screen.
Leap Motion apparently intends to offer a motion-detecting accessory that can be used to make non-touchscreens act like they are touch controllable. This technology could benefit tablets as well, though.
When a tablet is being used with a keyboard dock, the user is required to reach over the keyboard whenever they need to access the touchscreen. A device that has Leap Motion's technology built into it -- possibly into the keyboard dock -- would let the user access on-screen controls just by bringing their hands up off the keyboard. This would save a lot of reaching, and also save Windows tablet users from needing to carry around a mouse or stylus, or needing a trackpad on the keyboard.
That's currently something of an issue for Windows 8 tablets: they can run legacy software but much of this was designed to be controlled with a mouse and pointer, and using it with a finger can be challenging. An on-screen pointer controlled by gestures would solve this problem.
Only time will tell if Leap Motion's motion-sensing technology is incorported into future tablets, however.
