As has been rumored, Apple has just invited journalists to a special event a week from today. The invite doesn't spell out what's on the docket, but an updated version of the iPad 5 is considered very likely.
There have been leaks, speculation, and rumors for months about iPad 5, which is expected to be the most significant update to this tablet since the spring of 2012. The device is expected to be getting smaller and also faster thanks to an Apple A7 processor. Apple's new biometric security system might also be included.
The tagline for the email Apple sent out this morning is "We still have a lot to cover", which could be a reference to new Smart Covers. If the next-generation iPad really is getting trimmed down, then smaller versions of Apple's magnet-powered covers will also be necessary.
There are looming questions on whether the iPad mini 2 will be announced next week, and if so, what its featureset will be. Some unconfirmed reports have said that Apple will release an updated 7.9-inch model with a high-resolution "Retina" display, but other reports indicate that this won't happen until next year.
The company could be planning a speed-bump version of this tablet now, possibly with a fingerprint scanner, and the Retina display might have to wait until the iPad mini 3.
In addition, Apple executives will likely take to the stage next Tuesday to discuss the next Mac Pro as well as OS X Mavericks.
