It's only been a few weeks since Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 owners were first able to upgrade their tablets to Android 4.4, but it appears that the next iteration of KitKat is already on its way to Google's slates. Android 4.4.1, as it's called, has already been released for the Nexus 5, but the update is gradually marching out to the 2012 Nexus 7, 2013 Nexus 7, the Nexus 10 and the Nexus 4 as well.
In fact, you can manually download the update from Google's servers today if you own any of those devices, but there's a certain amount of skill and risk involved in doing that. For those who don't want to jump through any hoops, a Google spokesperson confirmed to TabletPCReview that 4.4.1 is indeed running out to the same devices that got Android 4.4, so an OTA update should be coming to your machine within the next few days.
Google has already come out and touted a handful of camera changes that 4.4.1 will bring to the Nexus 5, but when it comes to the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, the benefits of the update aren't entirely clear. When asked for comment, a Google spokesperson would not provide any more detail about the nature of the update outside of those Nexus 5 camera changes. However, the download is approximately 50MB in size, which doesn't leave room for too many improvements. It's likely that the update will focus on bug fixes and other smallish changes, but once we get our hands on 4.4.1 in action, we'll be sure to let you know if there's more to say.
UPDATE: It looks like 4.4.1 is already old news. A small update to Android 4.4.2 is reportedly already on its way to the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, and both Nexus 7 tablets. A Sprint changelog reveals that 4.4.2 is a very minor release, focusing on bug fixes and slight performance boosts, but Nexus owners should nevertheless be receiving their upgrades shortly. We've reached out to Google for official details on Android 4.4.2's release, and we'll update this post again if we hear more.
