Type Machine Review

Whether you’re drafting a presentation or sending a lengthy text message, chances are you’ve lost some of your work because an app crashed. Or perhaps you’re like me and have penchant for clumsily striking the delete key on your smartphone. While many apps still don’t offer restoration features, Android users can easily back up every word with Type Machine.

Type MachineType Machine operates in the background, recording input text from your entire app library. Upon installation, the app requires that you allow it to function as an accessibility service (via your settings), which is how the program saves text. After that, pretty much anything that is typed will be stored and organized according to the app it originated from.

Type Machine does more than just recall what you previously typed. The app allows you to scroll through a timeline to see the entire text-entry process. For example, if you edited a paragraph, you’d have the option of retaining the old text or going with the new version. Saved information can be copied directly to a clipboard or sent to a wide variety of platforms, including email, Twitter, or your personal Google Drive.

While Type Machine automatically stores data in the background, the app’s settings allow you to fine-tune the process. You can set an expiration date for saving data, deleting everything after a day or two, or opt for the app to store the information indefinitely. Similar to a lock screen, the app can be secured with PIN to keep the data secure. The software also offers a black-list function to prevent Type Machine from recording data from specific applications.

Understandably, you may have privacy concerns about such an app. After all, at first glance Type Machine basically looks like a keylogger, but there’s an important distinction between the two. Type Machine doesn’t have Internet access, meaning that it can’t offload any of your personal information.

The simple and versatile feature set of Type Machine make it the perfect backup tool. The application is compatible with Android devices and is available on the Google Play store for $1.99.
