Sony PlayStation App Will Turn iOS and Android Devices into a Second Screen

[click to view image]In Sony's press conference earlier this week the company revealed its next generation gaming system, the PlayStation 4. Along with unearthing a new console (which the company didn't show), Sony also revealed a PlayStation App for Android and iOS smartphone and tablets.

The new application will enable Apple iPad, iPhone, and Google Android-based tablets and smartphones to become a second screen. Similar to Microsoft's Smartglass app, once the PlayStation app is installed it can be instantly synced with the PlayStation 4 console to provide an additional display.

Users will be able to use the second screen while playing games to see additional information such as an in-game map. However, the second display can also be used outside of gameplay to purchase new PS4 titles, or to watch live gameplay directly from your home console.

The Era of Connectivity

The PlayStation app isn't a surprising move from Sony. This generation has seen a push for interconnectivity, where gamers can play the console games they love on more devices. Nintendo's Wii U, which launched last year offers a full functioning second screen in its tablet controller. While Microsoft offers similar functionality with its smartglass app, and Valve is even letting PC users play on their televisions with Steam Big Picture Mode.
