Today is the fifth anniversary of the launch of the Apple App Store, the official source for software for the iPad and iPhone. To celebrate, ten popular games and other apps are free for a limited time.
Since the App Store launched on June 10, 2008, it has grown to 900,000 titles, including 375,000 that are optimised for the iPad.
This is somewhat ironic, as Apple originally did not want it. When the first iPhone was released it had no support for running native applications. After a year of complaints from users, the App Store debuted with the release of the company's second smartphone, the iPhone 3G.
