[click to view image]Those who want an inexpensive, small tablet that runs the full version of Windows need look no farther than the newly-announced Toshiba Encore.
"Our fundamental approach to designing Encore was to create a better convergence of hardware and software so the overall app experience and capabilities on a Windows-based device is better than ever, "said Carl Pinto, vice president of marketing for Toshiba America's Digital Products Division.
The tablet will have an 8-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1280 x 800. It's going to be 0.42 inches (10.7mm) thick and weigh just over a pound (480g).

Most of this will be taken up by the operating system, but users will be able to add up to 32GB of additional storage with a microSD memory card slot.
Like all small tablets with Windows 8.1, it is going to be bundled with a full version of Office Home and Student 2013.
This tablet will be Wi-Fi-only, but it will include a USB 2.0 port, a micro-HDMI port, dual microphones and dual cameras: an 8MP one on the back and a 2MP one on its front.
Price and Availability
The Toshiba Encore Tablet will be available for purchase in November at major retailers and directly from Toshiba.
It is going to sell for $330 -- much less than larger tablets running Windows 8.
