Two new Wi-Fi only Android tablets are coming to Best Buy, as sales of the Acer Iconia A500 have already begun, and the HTC Flyer is extremely close behind.
Acer Iconia A500 Release
Acer officially announced the Iconia A500 release details recently, and nothing has changed since that announcement. The April 24 release and $450 price tag are both consistent with what Acer promised, and the comparably inexpensive A500 is shipping now.
Because they share the same Honeycomb OS, comparisons between the Iconia A500 and the first ever Honeycomb device, the Motorola Xoom, are inevitable. It turns out that the Wi-Fi only Iconia A500, which costs $150 less than the Wi-Fi only Xoom, sports almost identical specs to Motorola’s device. The similarities include a 1GHz Dual-Core NVIDIA Tegra processor, a 10.1-inch screen with 1280 x 800 resolution, 1 GB of RAM, and 2 MP rear-facing and 5 MP front-facing cameras.
A 4G version of the Iconia A500, the Iconia A501, is set to launch from AT&T sometime this quarter.
HTC Flyer Pre-Sale
The HTC Flyer isn’t available quite yet, however Best Buy has just begun a pre-sale of the device today (April 25). The 7-inch tablet costs $500, and will start shipping at some undesignated point later this spring.
The HTC Flyer will most likely ship with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) upon first release, with an upgrade to Honeycomb planned for sometime later on. The smaller tablet features a throwback marketing approach, with one of its biggest highlights being its N-trig pen technology.
