Wine for AndroidThe ability to run Windows applications on an Android tablet or phone may be a reality in the future. The popular Linux Windows Emulator WINE is reportedly planning to go mobile with an app for Google’s Android OS.

Wine (WINdows Emulator) is an open-source application that allows Windows software to run on Unix operating systems such as Linux. The program is able to help port apps with its software library Winelib, against which developers can compile Windows applications to help port them to Linux.

The original WINE developer Alex Julliard is working to port the software over to Google’s mobile OS. Julliard briefly revealed WINE on Android on Sunday in Brussels. According to a report filed from Phoronix, WINE’s performance on Android was horrendously slow. However, the performance problems have been attributed to the demo running on emulated Android environment in place of an actual Android device.

WINE likely won’t be on Android for quite some time, and how the program will perform once it’s on the popular OS remains to be seen.
