When considering its “Next Big Thing”, Apple could be thinking literally. An unconfirmed report indicates that this company is considering a tablet with a nearly 13-inch display.
This report comes from The Wall Street Journal, and is based on information from screen suppliers. It claims Apple has asked these parts makers to consider a tablet that would be noticeably larger than the current 9.7-inch iPad.
There’s no way to know at this point if the company will actually introduce this super-size model. It is expected to release a new version of the full-size iPad in two months, and an updated iPad mini a month later.
The company is also reportedly working on a larger iPhone. Read more about it on our sister site Brighthand.
Bucking Another Trend?
If Apple really does launch a 12.9-inch iPad, it will be going against conventional wisdom. Currently, the most popular tablets are smaller, cheaper products. For example, the 7.9-inch iPad mini is outselling the 9.7-inch version nearly two-to-one.
On the other hand, Apple has been very successful going against conventional wisdom in the past. The company was widely criticized when the iPad was first announced in 2010 — at that time, tablets were a niche product that saw little, if any profits. Several years later, roughly a third of the U.S. population has a tablet of some kind.
