Sprint could be getting its own version of the iPad 2, according to new reports.
On the heels of reports that Sprint will begin carrying the iPhone beginning in October, new reports suggest that Apple and Sprint have completed work on an iPad 2 that is compatible with the carrier’s wireless network.
If the rumors hold true, the combination of Apple’s popular iPad and Sprint’s more attractive rate plans (it is the only major carrier still offering unlimited data) could put the carrier on par with the nation’s two largest wireless carriers, Verizon and AT&T. The report claims the Sprint version of the iPad 2 is completely separate from Verizon’s 3G model. While it is unclear if the Sprint iPad 2 will run on the carrier’s 3G or 4G WiMax network. To date, no carrier offers a 4G iPad or iPad 2.
Sprint reps would not comment on the iPad 2 rumor when TabletPCReview met with them at an event in New York recently.
The addition of the blockbuster tablet and ever-popular smartphone could prove extremely successful for Sprint, which has struggled in past years against AT&T and Verizon.
