Despite rumors to the contrary, Apple has just announced that its tablets will be getting upgrades to the latest version of the iOS at the same time its phones are. At the same event, the company revealed that it’s making its Office suit and some other powerful software free.

The company’s next-generation mobile operating system was unveiled back in June, so its redesigned look and feel did not come as a surprise today.

The date iPad users have been waiting for, when they’ll be able to download iOS 7 for free, is Wednesday, Sept. 18 — just over a week from today.

Apple surprised almost everyone today when it revealed that there will be a 64-bit version of this operating system so it can run on the newly-developed 64-bit Apple A7 processor.

A Big Surprise

Since it launched the iOS back in 2007, Apple has come out with a range of software for it. Among the most powerful of these are the Keynote, Pages, and Numbers as well as iPhoto and iMovie.

Previously, these sold for relatively high prices, but Apple CEO Tim Cook has just announced that they are all going to be free to those who buy a new iOS tablet or smartphone.
