Apple has just announced that, during the third quarter of this year, it sold 14.1 million tablets, up just slightly year-over-year.
The company sold 14.1 million iPads during the July-September period, compared to 14 million in the year-ago quarter.
Apple is the only company that announces how many tablets it sells. This forces analysts to estimate how many devices are made by the company’s rivals, and these figures usually vary widely from analyst to analyst.

And even Apple doesn’t break out how many of each of its different models it is selling. This means that there’s no way to know how many of the 14.1 million devices the company reported were full-size iPads and how many were iPad minis. Still, analysts estimate that the 7.9-inch version outsells the 9.7-inch one 2-to-1.
All Apple’s tablets sold in the year-ago quarter were full-size iPads, as the smaller model had not yet been introduced.
During the second quarter of this year, the company had a net profit of $7.5 billion on revenue of $37.5 billion. These results compare to revenue of $36 billion and net profit of $8.2 billion in the same period a year ago.
There were 33.8 million iPhones sold last quarter, compared to 26.9 million in the year-ago quarter. Apple also sold 4.6 million Macs, compared to 4.9 million in the year-ago quarter.
