Apple’s Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are now available for free to anyone who wishes to download them. The same is true for iMovie and GarageBand.
The iWork applications are cross-compatible with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files. That said, those who want use the genuine Microsoft Office can get a version for their iPad.
The goal is to allow businesses and educational institutions that are enrolled in the Apple Volume Purchase Program to have access to this productivity and entertainment software for free.
There’s some justification for thinking that these applications have been free for a long time, but that was only for those who purchased a new tablet or computer at retail. Apple has now changed that policy, and they’re now free downloads for everyone.
The Mac versions of all these apps are also available for free.
