Given Apple’s history of iPad launches in late February and early March, it was safe to assume the Mac maker would launch its next generation iPad, likely called the iPad 3 or iPad 2S, around the same late winter timeframe. Now, sources are telling AllThingsD that Apple will announce the new iPad in the first week or March.
Apple will hold the event in San Francisco, as it has the past two years, and the timing aligns well with Mobile World Congress, which will wrap up March 1. Apple could upstage any news and tablet launches from rivals like Samsung at mobile showcase, with which Apple is not involved. Last year, Apple announced the iPad 2 on the same week the Motorola Xoom became available, and stole many headlines from Motorola and Google.
While little is officially known about the iPad 3 or iPad 2S, many assume it will have a high resolution display, possibly 2048 x 1536, or double the iPad 2 display resolution. It may also support LTE, have a quad-core A6 processor, and be a bit thicker than the iPad 2 in order to support a proper battery and the high resolution display.
