Archos Gen 9 Tablets Coming Sooner Than Expected

Archos SlideContrary to previous reports, Archos has decided to release its two Gen 9 tablets prior to this year’s IFA, with a slated release timeframe of June 2011.

The two slates from Archos, which will run Google Android OS 3.0 (Honeycomb) are both powered by a 1.6 GHz ARM A9 dual-core chip and have options to feature either a 250 GB HDD (a first for tablets) or a 32 GB SSD for storage. The tablets will also a feature a “disruptive 3G modem”, for which there is still patent pending, and they will be priced competitively at 400 Euros, approximately $566.

Archos’ move of bumping up the release date of its tablets to a few months before the September trade show has been seen by some as an attempt to steal the thunder of the recently-released Apple iPad 2. While the Gen 9 tablets have the potential to be competitive with Apple — what with their powerful processors and relatively low price range — Archos still has to compete with the loyalty of the rabid Apple fanbase if it wants to have any chance at succeeding.
