ASUS is ramping up efforts to bring the first quad-core tablet up to spec, announcing today via Facebook that the Tegra 3-toting Transformer Prime tablet will receive an update to Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 on January 12. In addition, the company will also provide an unlock tool for the locked bootloader that ships in the tablet.
ASUS also addressed the Transformer Prime’s poor GPS performance, citing the “metallic unibody design” as the cause, and claiming the Android tablet is not a professional GPS device. In addition, ASUS has removed any mention of the GPS feature on spec sheets and marketing materials.
ASUS explained the reasoning for the locked bootloader, which prevents modding and other Android tinkering, is related to Google DRM and providing “a high quality video rental experience,” namely Google video rentals through the Android Market.
