Barnes & Noble Debuts PubIt for DIY eBooks

by Reads (2,216)

If the digitization of the written word has done anything, it has lowered the boundaries for entry. Any would-be novelist can crank out a 1,000 page epic and publish it online. Now thanks to Barnes & Noble PubIt, they can publish it as a nice and neat eBook, too.

Barnes & Noble touts PubIt as being “easy as 1-2-3!” Registered users simply must upload a text file (DOC, DOCX, HTML, RTF, and TXT all accepted) to the PubIt portal, and Barnes & Noble converts it to the ePub format, which is the open-source eBook standard. Users can then set their own price for their work — be it a novel, short story, poem or essay — ranging from $.99 to $199.99, with Barnes & Noble taking a cut of all sales (35% for eBooks less than $10, 60% for eBooks more than $10).

The eBooks will be viewable on Nook eReades as well as the Nook apps for Android and iPhone. Plagiarists beware! Barnes & Noble claims they will monitor all content for copyright violations.
