Barnes & Noble has sent out official invitations to an event on May 24, where the eReader manufacturer and bookstore giant will almost certainly announce the newest member of its NOOK family.
It was revealed on May 5 that Barnes & Noble filed with the SEC, including in its report that it “expects to make an announcement on May 24, 2011, regarding the launch of a new eReader device.” The invitations have been sent, and come 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 24, there should be another competitor in the NOOK vs. Kindle duel that currently dominates the eReader market.
The nature of the device is not yet known. It could follow in the footsteps of the NOOK Color, a device B&N has termed “the reader’s tablet,” considering its functionality as both an eReader and Android slate.
Equally, or possibly even more likely, however, is that the new eReader is a follow-up to the original NOOK, which featured both an eInk screen and a smaller LCD touchscreen, and was unquestionably an eReader.
Whether B&N decides to unveil an entirely new, devoted eReader, or drifts even further into the realm of tablets, we’ll know a lot more about the new device in one week’s time.
