Barnes & Noble Nook HD Tablets Can Now Access Apps, Video, Ebooks, and Music Through Google Play

When the Barnes & Noble Nook HD series debuted, users of these tablets could only get apps and other content from B&N. That has now changed.

The Nook HD and Nook HD+ can now use Android apps like Gmail, YouTube, Google Search and Google Maps.  As they can now access Google Play, users of these tablets have access to more than 700,000 Android apps and games, millions of songs and more.

This gives B&N’s tablets a leg up over their arch rivals, the Amazon Kindle series, as those models don’t support Google Play.

An over-the-air update that brings access to Google’s app store has just been released for Nook HD users in the U.S. and U.K. Installing this requires the tablet to be connected to a Wi-Fi network.
