While it’s easy to describe the BlackBerry PlayBook line of tablets as dead as disco, a recent interview indicates that this might be a touch premature.
The first and only BlackBerry tablet debuted back in 2011, and sales were not up to expectations, which almost certainly explains why the company never introduced a follow up. Given that it’s been nearly three years, and BlackBerry’s desperate on-going struggle to stay afloat in the phone market, most had considered a second PlayBook a forgone conclusion.
But in an interview this week with Pocket-lint, Francois Mahieu, BlackBerry VP of global product management said “Would BlackBerry consider one day re-entering the tablet market? Yes. Will BlackBerry do it in the coming months? No.”
Mahieu went on to say, “I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a meeting one day and I show you a tablet. We have equity in that space, but we’re not ready. We need more time.”
