As Comcast claims, TV really might end up everywhere, as the company will be taking its iPad, iPhone and iPod touch apps one step further soon, allowing Xfinity TV customers to stream TV shows and movies onto their tablet device.
Comcast president Neil Smit announced the app, called “Play Now,” on Wednesday at a UBS AG conference. Initially, he said, the app will only work with premium networks like HBO, Starz, and Showtime. The intention is to eventually make all video content available, and Comcast is currently working out rights with other networks.
“Play Now” comes as part of Comcast’s TV Everywhere initiative (which makes certain content available online to service subscribers), supplementing the recently released Xfinity TV app, allowing customers to turn their iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touches into universal remotes for video-on-demand content. “Play Now” is coming as an expected update to the existing app, which has since seen more than 350,000 downloads.
The “Play Now” app will be available “in the coming weeks,” according to Smit.
