Dell Could be Getting Back into the Android Tablet Business

A mysterious device appears on the roadmap of upcoming Dell tablets that leaked out last month. An analyst seems to have indicated that this will be the company’s first Android tablet in quite some time.

The leaked roadmap gave few details on this device, just saying that it will have a 10.8-inch screen and is scheduled for release around November. No operating system was mentioned, but it was clear this tablet won’t be part of either of Dell’s current product lines, both of which use Microsoft Windows.

In a new blog post, Richard Shim, an analyst with DisplaySearch, said that Dell is going to release an Android-based tablet this fall.

The analyst indicated that this will have an 8-inch display, however, not a 10.8 inch one. It’s not clear at this point if Dell plans to make both mid-size and full-size tablets, or if the company’s plans have changed and it will make only a mid-size one.

As Shim points out, tablets in the 10-inch range used to dominate the market, but ones with 7-inch or 8-inch screens have become more popular over the last year. Dell could be following this trend.

If Dell really is working on an Android tablet, it will mark a change of strategy. Late last year, a high-level company executive made it clear that Dell’s focus was on Windows, and it couldn’t see a way to make a profit on Android-based devices. The company made several over the years before dropping out of the market.
