EverNote Latest Release Offers Exciting New Features
Microsoft’s OneNote (sometimes called “the reason to by a Tablet PC”) is undoubtably the most popular software title for tablet users. Riding hard on MSFT’s tails is EverNote, the second most popular choice in Tablet PC notetaking software.
EverNote’s most recent update release on November 10th offers a slew of most impressive features that challenge the functionality of the almighty OneNote. With many new thoughtful features such as the hotkey combinations, advanced find and integration with Internet Explorer, the latest version of OneNote adds even more value to its already modest $34.95 pricetag (for the full featured version).
Microsoft has already proven its worth with OneNote and offered the “Service Pack 2” free to existing OneNote customers back in September. However this download did not add a big list of added features, but just a whole lot of bug fixes. EverNote on the otherhand has added both in its new Public Release version 184.108.40.206 last week. Public Release 220.127.116.11 (Nov. 10, 2005)
Global Hotkeys: With EverNote running in the background, the following keystroke combinations are now available system-wide, across all applications:
Ctr+Alt+V pastes the Windows system Clipboard contents into a new EverNote note — behind the scenes. To use this feature, press Ctrl-C or choose Edit>Copy for the selected content in any application, then press Ctrl+Alt+V.
Ctrl+Alt+N calls up a new EverNote note for convenient typing or pasting. (To activate these features, add checkmarks to these options at Tools>Options>Tape)
Other Shortcut Keystrokes:
Ctr+Shift+O duplicates right-click command in the body of a note, creates an ordered list
Ctrl+Shift+B duplicates right-click command in the body of a note, creates a bulleted list
Advanced Find Features: When using SmartSearch, every found keyword is now displayed when you use the new “Find Next” and “Find Previous” features (press F3 and Shift+F3).
Pin EverNote on Top: EverNote now provides the choice in Tools>Options>General to “Keep EverNote on top of all other windows”
Web Clipper: The Web Clipper that EverNote automatically installs in Internet Explorer, for one-click copying of web content to EverNote, is now automatically installed in Firefox as well.
Category Colors: A new Label Color property now lets you color your category names in the Category Panel.
Ink Note Colors: Custom colors and grid step are now available for background paper and grid in ink notes.
Default Note Type: Users can now choose their preferred default note type through Tools>Options>Tape.
Delete Note: A new Delete Note command is now available when you right-click the content of any note. You can also now Ctrl+click on any note bar Delete button or Ctrl+click on the note bar’s right-click Delete command to permanently delete that note, without moving it first to Deleted Notes.
Copy Image to the Clipboard: Users can now select and right-click an image in a note and use the Copy command to copy it to the clipboard.
Default Note Author: Users can now designate a default note author name in Tools>Options>General that appears in notes when they are exported or emailed.
Flash Demo: A flash demo now appears for new EverNote users upon Install, providing a short intro to EverNote. This demo can also be run from the Help>EverNote Demo command.
Bug Fixes & Improvements:
EverNote Database: The underlying technology that runs the EverNote database is now both more robust and more efficient.
Insert Note command: Renamed the right-click command in note text from “Add” to the more appropriate “Insert” to indicate that a new note can be inserted between two older notes.
Document Links: Fixed problem seen in some systems whereby “Go to Source” links to documents such as Microsoft Word and Excel were not working properly.
Image Display in Emails: Corrected problem whereby small pictures appeared artificially large in emails when using the Send To command.
Maximized State Persistence: Main window now keeps its maximized state when activated by another instance of EverNote.
Date Stamp of Dropped Notes: Notes attached to emails by the File>Send To>EverNote User command now adopt the current date so they can be dragged to the end of the recipient’s tape and do not refresh to a different date location.
To Do with Dates: Fixed problem whereby deleting a To Do item with a date did not properly delete the date. Tools>Options: Moved “Assign Selected Categories to New Notes” to Category options panel and disabled this option by default. Firefox clippings: Fixed problem whereby HTML code was appearing inside some webpage content clipped from Firefox.
Import/Export: Fixed problems that impacted proper use of these commands. Multi-page Logitech io Digital Pen documents: Pages imported from io pen input that were overlapping are now laid out one after another, with white space.
