Exec In Charge of the BlackBerry PlayBook Has Resigned

There’s another nail in the coffin of the PlayBook II: the person at BlackBerry who was responsible for the first version is leaving the company.

The first and only BlackBerry tablet debuted back in 2011, and there have been questions ever since if/when there will be a follow-up. This question might be answered by the departure of David J. Smith, who headed up the development of the original PlayBook.

That device did not sell nearly as well as its maker hoped, and the company’s CEO Thorsten Heins has made it clear in recent months that all BlackBerry’s focus is on smartphones now.
