The Google Nexus 7 has been out for a year now, and a replacement is widely expected to be coming soon. An unconfirmed report says this will be out at the end of the month, and will cost much more than many had been expecting.

Google Nexus 7The second-generation version will supposedly have a 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) screen, up from the current 1280 x 800.

At its heart will allegedly be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor.

It’s not clear what version of the Android OS it will run. It may be the debut of Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean), as Android 5.0 (Key Lime Pie) isn’t expected to debut until this fall.

In addition to its awkward name, the Google Nexus 7 II will reportedly cost $300. That’s significantly higher than the $200 price of the base model of the first-generation version. As sometimes happens in unconfirmed reports like this one, it’s possible there’s some confusion about pricing for the various versions — the 32GB model might be $300, while a 16GB one will be less.

The current device has a single front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera. Its followup will supposedly have the same, but also add a 5 MP camera on the back.

The original Nexus 7 depends entirely on Wi-Fi for its Internet access, but the second-generation model will supposedly have 4G LTE as an option.
