It seems that the name of the Transformer Prime tablet hits a little too close to home for Hasbro, as the toy company is suing the maker of the device, ASUS, for “misappropriating” its intellectual property. For those that are not familiar with the Transformer toys (or cartoon shows or Michael Bay movies), the leader of the protagonists, the Autobots, is named Optimus Prime.
The names of the Transformer Optimus Prime and the ASUS tablet may not be identical, but they’re certainly close enough that Hasbro may have a case here. At any rate, a spokesperson for Hasbro seemed confident that this was a case worth pursuing, saying, “The specific actions we are taking today against ASUS underscores yet again Hasbro’s willingness to pursue companies who misappropriate our intellectual property for their own financial gain.”
So it remains to be seen whether or not ASUS will have to pull their product from shelves — a la Samsung and HTC after running into some legal trouble with Apple — or if the company will simply have to change their name of the product. Here’s hoping that it’s the latter, as it’s quite a solid Android tablet.
