Much of the work is abut to celebrate the arrival of a new year, but the Chinese New Year isn’t for another few weeks. And when it arrives, it won’t me much of a holiday for those assembling the iPad mini and iPhone 5.

Apple iPad miniThe Chinese New Year  holiday is the most important of the year, by a wide margin. In Western terms, it’s Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years Day, and everyone’s birthday all rolled into one. The celebration actually lasts for 15 days.

Factories are usually closed, as all the employees want to travel to visit their families. That’s why it’s so unusual that some Foxconn and Flexium Interconnect factory lines will be going during the holiday. Flexium makes components for the devices, while Foxconn employees assemble the devices.

The companies are making this move to keep up with demand for two Apple devices, the iPad mini and the iPhone 5. Both launched this fall, and both have enjoyed strong sales. Production has caught up with demand for the latest iPhone, but the iPad mini is still backordered.

Strong demand its only one of the reasons this tablet is in such short supply — production problems have reportedly lowered the yield rate.
