Hulu and Netflix, watch out! Freecast’s RabbitTV, a different player in the video streaming space, is looking to lure more movie and TV fans with a new strategy that involves ditching its USB stick, streamlining its UI (user interface), and rolling out new iOS and Android apps.
RabbitTV’s strengths include low pricing of $10 per year for video streaming, along with a huge content inventory and a “TV Guide” style directory, contended Tyler Shears, director of marketing for Freecast, in an interview with TabletPCReview during CES. Users can stream more than 3,000 TV stations, 50,000 movies, and 9,000 radio stations.
Rabbit has sold more than two million of its USB sticks — needed until now for signing in to its Web site — over the past ten months, according to Shears.
But the company is now in the process of dropping the sticks as it transitions to a new web site, set to open in February, which won’t require a device for user authentication. “There have been some technical difficulties with the USB device,” he acknowledged. “We’ll also be moving away from an ad-heavy interface.”
iOS App Due in Three Weeks
Meanwhile, RabbitTV has already released an app for Android, with an iOS app due out in about three weeks. “The iOS app is in review, and we’re just fixing some minor things,” he said.
Also in February, Rabbit expects to launch a new $99 set top box, along with a premium service.
The set top box will pull in content from RabbitTV and other “premium” providers, along with access to email, Skype video calling, cloud storage for videos and music, and operation of video home security monitoring systems, for example.
The upcoming, hockey puck-sized Rabbit TV Select device will connect to flat panel TVs through HDMI. It will also communicate with tablets and smartphones.
Pricing information isn’t yet available for Rabbit’s premium service, Shears told TabletPCReview.
