IEEE Working on a Wireless Charging Standard

There are several companies that make wireless charging products, but many of these aren’t cross compatible. The newly-announced IEEE Wireless Power and Charging Systems Working Group (WPCS-WG) hopes to change that by creating a standard for these products.

“Wireless power and charging is a concept whose time has come. However, rapid development and deployment of the required wireless infrastructure will be key to its acceptance in the market, and standards are a critical underpinning of that infrastructure,” said Konstantinos Karachalios, managing director of the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA).

Starting in early 2014, the working group is going to develop the IEEE P2100.1 Standard Specifications for Wireless Power and Charging Systems, the first in a series of anticipated standards.

The IEEE is the group resonsible for the creation of a wide array of well-known standards, including 802.11, also known as Wi-Fi.
