According to the NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report, Apple continued to lead the mobile PC market during the first quarter of 2012 thanks to the success of its iPad tablet.
Numbers show that Apple shipped nearly 17.2 million mobile PCs in Q1 2012, with 13.6 million of those being the iPad. Thanks to its tablet, Apple reached a 22.5% share in the mobile PC market, nearly twice as its closest competitor, HP. Acer, Lenovo, and Dell completed the top five mobile PC companies in terms of shipment.
HP sold 8.9 million units, and Acer came in third with 6.9 million units sold. Lenovo and Dell sold 5.9 million units and 5.6 million units respectively.
Apple continued to dominate the tablet PC market with an overwhelming 13.6 million units sold in Q1 for a market share of 62.8%. Samsung was a distant second with 1.6 million units sold, while Amazon, RIM, and ASUS had less than a million units sold, rounding out the top five.
The total mobile PC shipments for Q1 2012 were 76.2 million units, a seasonal drop of 15% compared to Q4 2011.
