iPad users shouldn’t waste their time trying to download the first update to iOS 7, as it’s only for smartphones.

As Apple’s website makes clear, iOS 7.0.1 is “for iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S”. It fixes a problem with how the fingerprint scanner built into the iPhone 5C interacts with iTunes.

Expect an iOS Update Soon

There will almost certainly be additional updates released soon — there are reports that Apple is already testing iOS 7.0.2 and 7.1.

These should take care of a number of known bugs with this new version, such as the one involving the unlock screen that makes it possible to put an iPad or iPhone into Airplane Mode to prevent it from being searched for or remotely erased.
