Keeping Your Tablet PC in Tip Top Shape with Windows Live OneCare

Keeping your Tablet PC in tip top shape can be a time consuming and boring job. Experienced Windows users know the importance of running regular virus scans, updating anti-spyware definitions, defragmenting the hard disk – the list goes on. If you are one of the lucky few who work in a corporate environment, then you may very well have an IT Staff on hand to take care of all these tasks for you. However if you are a student, home user or newbie who wants to have the essential maintenance tasks automated without having to “do it yourself”, there is a solution.

Microsofts Windows Live OneCare (“OneCare” for short) subscription service is like having your very own “IT guy” to take care of  all the essential tasks to help ensure the integrity of your data and Tablet PC. All of the dull and repetetive PC maintenance tasks can be automated with minimal input by the user by using the OneCare service. We downloaded and installed the trial version of OneCare to see just how it all works.

OneCare Features

  • Protection Plus – Includes antivirus and antispyware scanning and manages a firewall. Helps protect your computer from viruses, worms, Trojan horses, hackers, and other threats. As illustrated in the screenshots, there are various tabs for the user to customize the settings of  each feature.

In a “Tune-up” tab, the user can define how often the recommended tasks run.

  • Backup and Restore – Automatically copies important files and settings to CD, DVD, or external hard disk.

  • Instant Support –  24/7 Support options from Microsoft

Windows Live OneCare offers a fairly comprehensive set of tools to keep your Tablet PC running properly. Taking the idea even further, Microsoft has designed the service to accomplish 99% of the job automatically. OneCare is a practical solution for anyone who wants to keep up PC integrity minus the constant need to run the tools, updates and the time to “read up” on all the latest in PC security.

OneCare Installation

Installing the OneCare application is easy. The installer guides the user through the steps, making all OneCare features available. While we did not install the Windows Defender software, it is highly recommended to protect your Tablet PC from spyware.

As we downloaded and installed the free 30 day OneCare trial, we took some screenshots along the way…

The first “screen” explains the entire installation process. The installer basically scans your PC to check for possible software conflicts prior to copying any files.

(You will be given two chances to make sure that you wish to proceed with the installation.)

Finally you will be able to choose to install Windows Defender (antispyware application). Although we did not install it during the initial setup, we chose to add it later.

Ahh… Finally step 3 – and away we go…

Alerts

Once the software is installed, there will be alerts as OnceCare security features will need user permission to allow any application that connects to the internet.

Various reminders will appear in a balloon. These can be minimized by setting up OneCare to automate the majority of functions.

We found Windows Live OneCare to be a great option for certain users who want to take the guesswork and hassle out of PC protection and maintenance. At $49.95 per year for the full suite (covers up to 3 PCs), this solution is a good value. Given the flexibility of the software automation and level of security, we would recommend Windows Live OnceCare as a great option to protect and maintain your Tablet PC.
